The company specializes in providing top-notch R&D, manufacturing, and carbon offset projects. Aim to create a world where cooking positively impacts all life on earth by manufacturing the most efficient biomass, liquid fuel, and electric cookstoves. Our solar-powered facility in Kenya, with a workforce of 900 individuals, of which 51% are women, is on course to manufacture and distribute more than 150,000 stoves monthly in 2022.
The company is seeking to employ a legal practitioner with specialized knowledge and experience in Labor and Employment law to fill a vacant position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
To qualify for the position, the ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and attributes:
- Possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in the practice of labor and employment law in a multinational company or law firm.
- Be a licensed lawyer qualified to practice in any of the relevant markets.
- Have in-depth knowledge of labor and employment laws in Sub-Saharan African countries, particularly Ghana, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Possess excellent analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Have a proven track record of conducting labor and employment-related investigations.
- Be knowledgeable about employee benefits and compensation plans.
- Have prior experience in managing outside counsel.
- Possess a proven record of resolving international legal issues across borders and multiple jurisdictions.
- Be a team player capable of working independently on multiple issues in a fast-paced, multicultural environment while focusing on the overall corporate mission, policies, and goals.
- Be fluent in both English and French or Portuguese (preferred).
JOB DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS
- Provide counsel to HR, local management, and supervisors on handling employee relations matters. This includes advising on employee hiring, counselling, discipline, pay, and benefits issues. By providing guidance on these matters, the legal practitioner can help ensure that the company is complying with relevant laws and regulations while also maintaining positive relationships with employees.
- Drafting employment contracts for various markets in line with Burn’s policies and updating the same to ensure compliance with the law and procedures. This involves reviewing and revising employment contracts to ensure that they are in line with current laws and regulations and that they adequately protect the interests of both the company and the employee.
- Partners with the HR team to proactively develop HR policies, processes, and initiatives that minimize legal risk and help create a positive workplace culture. This involves collaborating with HR to identify areas where the company can improve its policies and processes to better align with legal requirements and to foster a more positive and inclusive workplace environment.
- To ensure that the company is effectively managing employee relations matters, the legal practitioner prepares, directs, and conducts training programs on employee relations matters. This includes delivering training on topics such as employment law updates, disciplinary matters, investigative techniques, and documentation preparation to help ensure that the company is taking appropriate actions when dealing with employee issues.
- Lead or provide advice and mentorship on internal investigations. By recommending and helping to implement appropriate actions, the legal practitioner can help ensure that the company is effectively managing internal investigations and addressing any issues that arise in a timely and appropriate manner.
- In order to minimize legal risks, the legal practitioner is responsible for identifying and assessing labor law risks and mitigation measures. This involves staying up-to-date on relevant labor and employment laws and regulations, as well as understanding the potential legal risks associated with different employee relations matters.
- Remain current on emergent labor and employment law developments in the different markets where the company operates. By advising on the impact of these developments and implementing any necessary changes, the legal practitioner can help ensure that the company is staying compliant with relevant laws and regulations.
- Represents and advises the HR team and team leaders on employee relations matters, performance management, employee separations, redundancies, and unfair employment practices. By providing legal guidance and advice, the legal practitioner can help ensure that the company is managing these issues in a fair and legal manner, while also maintaining positive relationships with employees.
